Peer Listening

If you are interested in becoming an anonymous Peer Listener please click this.

Welcome to Bard Peer Listening! Feel free to call, email, or contact us anonymously via the chat on this page. Please note if there is a risk of harming yourself or others you will be referred to a professional counselor.

Scheduling

All week from 10:00Am - 1:00Am

How to use it:

Once you are on the official Peer Listening site you will notice a chat pop up on the bottom right. Here you will be able to contact and message a peer listener anonymously throughout your experience with us. After you begin a conversation a peer listener will be assigned to you so that you don’t have to feel like your starting from the beginning each time you message us. Every time you re-log onto the site the messages and conversations that you’ve had will be shown to you in the chat so you don’t have to worry if you decide to close the page and come back later to continue or finish a conversation. Our peer listeners will work their hardest to reply as fast as possible, but just keep in mind that they too are only students.

What it takes to be a peer listener!

To become a peer listener you must first complete this form which will then be reviewed by a committee. If accepted, you will have to go through a training course that will run for a couple of weeks to help you understand your role better and to learn how to interact and react to certain situations that you might encounter as a peer listener. After this mandatory training course led by Ms. Haberman, you will be confirmed as an official peer listener at BHSEC and you will be given a schedule that fits your needs.

The role of a peer listener!

As a Peer Listener, your role is to foster emotional well-being to those who reach out through the online anonymous chat. Your task is to be available to discuss any and all questions, conversations, and issues as long as they don't involve anything regarding potential physical harm or abuse. Peer listeners are not mental health counselors but they are able to refer you to the appropriate professional if necessary. Peer Listeners are trained in a variety of areas including listening skills and problem-solving, and they serve to be an objective and anonymous reasource.

Confidentiality throughout the program!

While communicating with peer listeners in this program, the conversation that takes place with be completely confidential between the two participants. The peer listener will not know who they are talking to at any time and vice versa. Due to legal reasons, if a student brings up an issue concerning their physical or mental health to an extent which could be dangerous to them or the environment, then the school administration will be contacted.
